The American Institute of Architects has announced the winners of the 2016 Housing Awards. Established in 2000, the program recognizes outstanding residential design and promotes the importance of good housing. The jury selected projects in three award categories: one/two family custom housing, multifamily living and special housing, emphasizing excellence in design as well as each residence's ability to provide a "sanctuary for the human spirit." Sustainability, affordability, social impact, innovation, durability, and meeting the specific needs of the client also factored into the judging criteria.
This year's recipients vary, from a summer lake house in the south to a residential community on the University of Massachusetts' Amherst campus. Notable designs include a 1,440-square-foot Oregon home, which was fully integrated into the landscape to allow the owners seamless interaction to the surrounding forest and pond, and three camper cabins in a Minnesota park, designed as a riff on the tree house.
