For a "clean, fresh" look in a Malibu living room, designers Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe painted walls Benjamin Moore's Simply White. "It's a happy white that doesn't feel cold, because it's chalky," Nickey says.

Against the living room's backdrop of neutrals, the designers made a nine-foot-long metal Colin Fisher mobile the dramatic centerpiece. They introduced more color in a few accents: a wool-and-silk rug from Amadi Carpets, pillows made of old kimono sashes, and an ottoman covered with a suzani. A coffee table from the designers' Los Angeles store, NK Shop, anchors a midcentury sofa, bench, and chairs. A vintage Peruvian hand chair adds whimsy. Two soaring trees — a Nickey Kehoe signature — echo the greenery surrounding the house.

The house's original owner, the actor Charles Bronson, used the dining room as his office. It's painted Lambert's Blue by Pratt & Lambert, closely matching the peacock hue Bronson used. Glossy white trim breaks up the expanse of blue, keeping it from overwhelming; the white also plays up the robust architectural details of the room, adding dimension to the space. The pattern of the curtain fabric — Jane Churchill's Rossini (now discontinued) — picks up the paint colors, along with the coppery tones of the Poul Henningsen Artichoke pendant light and the Nickey Kehoe chairs.

Master Bedroom

When they couldn't find artwork for the master bedroom, the designers came up with a temporary fix that became permanent: Sean Daly spray-painted "love" above the Nickey Kehoe bed. The curtains — Dahlia by Donghia — are 16 feet high, "so when they're closed you have this crazy, exaggerated leaf pattern," Nickey says. The cowhide rug from the Rug Company adds another natural motif.

A Missoni rug makes a colorful fashion statement in the master bath. As an homage to the wife's love of horses, Nickey had a redwood ofuro soaking tub by Sea Otter made in the style of an old wooden trough. The "blurry trees" imagery of Trove's Nyx wall-paper brings in another outdoorsy touch.
